D-Park
A 2,000 m² industrial heritage transformation in Beijing, utilizing Exposed Aggregate concrete to turn an abandoned factory site into a high-performance “City Show Stage".
An Industrial Evolution: Transforming Heritage into a Creative Show Stage
Located in the core of the Beijing Fashion Design Square, 751 D-Park. This project serves as a vital memory of urban culture, reimagining an abandoned "Industrial Rust Belt" into a vibrant "City Show Stage" where industrial heritage and modern fashion elements converge into a destination for public activities.
Bridging History and Modernity through Industrial Design
The design concept focuses on a seamless transition between the site’s historic industrial facilities such as coal conveying corridors and gantry cranes and new architectural additions like the library and sports field. The decorative concrete creates a unified landscape that connects the old and the new. To reinforce the site's unique identity, metal inlay technology was used to create a "site heartbeat" at the square's center, while sparkling aggregates were embedded into the pavement to catch and reflect light under various conditions.
Engineered for High-Performance and Hospitality
To meet the client’s high standards for both aesthetics and functionality, the project utilized Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems across 2,000 m² of flooring. This selection was driven by the need for a surface that could handle the load-bearing requirements of large-scale events while remaining resistant to pollution and easy to clean, a necessity for the on-site motorcycle club and its tire tracks. Large-size aggregates were strategically used to deliver a robust, low-maintenance finish suitable for a high-traffic urban environment.
Technical Precision in Execution
Execution required overcoming significant environmental and structural challenges, including the July rainy season and the integration of complex metal patterns. To prevent cracking at the sharp corners of the metal inlays, the team installed separate brackets to ensure perfect elevation with the floor surface. Furthermore, the project incorporated transfer bars and plates in the slab pours to ensure exceptional durability and usability, representing a sophisticated technical approach to large-scale hardscaping.
The Outcome
751 D-Park is now a classic benchmark for urban renewal and industrial heritage transformation. By merging precision craftsmanship with the raw aesthetic of decorative concrete, the environment offers a striking landscape that is as functional as it is rich in character, successfully preserving the deep connotation of Beijing’s industrial past.
