Mandai Wildlife EAST Urban Furniture
Custom-designed urban furniture using decorative concrete and salvaged timber, creating a sustainable and educational arrival experience at Mandai Wildlife.
A Gateway Experience Rooted in Nature and Hospitality
The Mandai Wildlife EAST Arrival Node serves as the primary gateway to Singapore’s Mandai nature precinct, welcoming visitors en route to destinations such as the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and River Wonders. Designed as a transitional space between transport hubs and ticketed attractions, the arrival node accommodates high visitor volumes while setting the tone for an immersive, nature-driven experience.
Designing the First Point of Interaction
As one of the first elements encountered by visitors, the urban furniture plays a critical role in shaping first impressions. A total of 22 custom-designed pieces were developed to provide both function and engagement—offering rest areas, gathering spaces, and interactive features that enhance the visitor journey from the moment of arrival.
Blending Concrete Craftsmanship with Natural Materials
The project showcases the versatility of decorative concrete through the use of Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems combined with integral color and polished finishes. These concrete elements are thoughtfully paired with locally sourced salvaged timber, creating a harmonious balance between built form and natural materiality. Surface textures were carefully crafted to emulate the appearance of natural granite discovered during early site works, reinforcing a strong connection to the site’s original landscape.
Sustainability and Universal Design in Practice
Beyond functionality, the urban furniture integrates educational elements into its design. Etched illustrations of animal and plant species are embedded into the surfaces, encouraging discovery and learning. Larger seating installations are designed to accommodate group interactions, including educational visits, transforming the furniture into both social and instructional spaces.
Sustainability was a core principle throughout the project, reflected in the use of salvaged timber and environmentally conscious material choices aligned with broader ecological goals. At the same time, universal design considerations ensure accessibility and comfort for a diverse range of users, reinforcing the site’s role as an inclusive public space.
Precision Craftsmanship with Design-Build Integration
Delivered through a design-and-build approach, the project required careful coordination to translate conceptual intent into finely crafted, durable installations. The result demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, showcasing how decorative concrete systems can be adapted to create bespoke, human-centered design solutions.
Today, the Mandai Wildlife EAST Arrival Node stands as more than just an entry point—it is an experience in itself. Through the integration of sustainable materials, thoughtful design, and functional artistry, the urban furniture establishes a welcoming environment that reflects the values of conservation, education, and hospitality.
