Xiwai Square, Beijing

Located within Beijing’s Jinke New Area, Xiwai Square underwent a comprehensive transformation to create a vibrant urban destination that seamlessly integrates recreation, commerce, and public life. Designed as a contemporary civic landmark, the redevelopment revitalized 2,900 square meters of paving alongside custom benches, tree pools, retaining walls, and landscape features that encourage interaction across all age groups. Central to the project’s identity was the use of Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems, delivering a unified material palette that combines architectural character with long-term durability.

The decorative concrete applications establish visual continuity throughout the site, connecting pavements, urban furniture, and landscape elements into a cohesive environment. Through carefully selected colors, textures, and forms, the project elevates everyday public spaces into a dynamic and engaging urban experience.

Design Concept

The design language balances linear geometry with flowing curves to create an environment that feels both structured and inviting. Warm beige tones form the primary visual foundation, while grass green and red Bomanite Exposed Aggregate finishes introduce vibrant accents within the basketball courts and gathering spaces. These color selections create a clean, contemporary atmosphere while reinforcing the square’s recreational function.

Custom arc-shaped benches, irregular seating elements, circular tree pools, and decorative retaining walls further enhance the spatial experience. At night, integrated lighting transforms the pavement into a canvas of light and shadow, adding depth and visual interest while extending the usability of the space beyond daylight hours.

Material Selection & Installation

Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems were selected for their ability to deliver rich texture, color consistency, slip resistance, and exceptional durability within a high-traffic public environment. The exposed aggregate finish provided the desired aesthetic quality while ensuring the structural performance necessary for daily pedestrian use and recreational activities.

Construction was challenged by winter temperatures and a compressed schedule that required the completion of numerous benches and tree pools before snowfall. Precise coordination between the construction team and lighting specialists ensured all conduits and lighting components were concealed beneath expansion joint systems, protecting the concrete from cracking while maintaining long-term lighting performance and infrastructure reliability.

The Outcome

Today, Xiwai Square stands as a modern public destination that successfully combines landscape, recreation, and urban commerce. The Bomanite Exposed Aggregate applications create a visually cohesive environment that is durable, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.

Beyond its architectural impact, the project supports the district’s low-carbon development goals through the use of ecological artistic concrete, which offers significant reductions in carbon emissions compared to traditional stone materials. The result is a sustainable and visually compelling civic space that enhances the quality of life within Beijing’s rapidly evolving urban landscape.
